I have completed 30 years as an architectural photographer and I think that throughout all this time I have learned a few things that I should share here with you.
I do not know really well what authority I have to write this beyond my many years of profession. The point for me is that the search for beauty in the built environment is deep and intense, that this is what I do and that I am very passionate and happy doing it.
Would these be some kind of ‘my advice for young photographers’? The truth is, I don't know if they are, but here they go because I would say that I can state the following:
Photography is an art like painting, sculpture, architecture, music, literature or cinema. All the arts contemplate reality and interpret it in order to interpellate a viewer whom they question with a creation of an aesthetic nature, be it a canvas, a novel, a symphony or a film. Architectural photography is an art that represents in an image the essence of the hidden details that make up the built environment.
If you have decided to be a photographer, then you have chosen a creative profession. You are going to be an individual with a unique ability to look at the world and portray it as no one but you can. That will be what you will do for life: you must remember it and claim it each and every day that you go out in the streets with your camera. You will be an artist and that, not everyone will understand it: get ready to give thousands of explanations and forget about leading a safe and comfortable life like that of your friends –but don't worry, it's worth it–.
If you insist on being a photographer, an artist and a professional, your responsibility will be to look at the world with your camera and question it incessantly so to share your look with whoever wants to contemplate it. Only you can see what your eyes look at, like all the photographers before you have done, all of them individuals whose greatest power was to be aware of that talent. Keep in mind that to be an artist you do not need to have your works in a museum or gallery: it is only a matter of attitude and you will be recognized for it, for sure.

Remember that despite the big words and everything about being an artist or not, you do not live in an ivory tower. All your talent is based on interpreting the present from everything you have learned and assimilated both from the arts and from all the people you will meet on your vital journey. You won’t never be alone although only you will be the one who will decide what to look at and how to explain it. You will see in the exercise of your profession that many people will value it and reward you with incredible opportunities –thank them, always–. You will also meet many despicable people that you will have to cope with so that their toxicity affects you the least.
Photography is not a craft that is used to solve a communication need with a technical skill, no matter how brilliant it may be. If it is a creative profession and you claim to be recognized as an artist, never stop learning from all the aesthetic stimuli that surround you. They are all important and they all contribute something to you: the entire history of art is so relevant as to transform you even if you are not aware at the time. If you want to be a photographer you do have to be in the world so you can cultivate your look. In the same way, learn to to be in society and to manage your business –that will be very useful to you–.
Once you feel yourself trained on everything your brain can capture, have chewed it up, and have digested it, work really hard to create your own style as a photographer. Invest huge amounts of time and energy to meditate on what makes your look different and to know how to apply it. Everything you learn from photography books is fine but you have to have your own style: in all these years nothing else has been as useful to me for this purpose as Ansel Adams' previsualization idea. That is the keystone on which I have built my look. Your style is what makes you different and interesting in the eyes of others.
Remember that always without exception everything depends on you. That despite the circumstances, no matter how hard they may be –whatever they may be, professional or vital– always in the end the one who decides is you. The decisions you make determine how far you want to travel as an artist and a professional, and that translates to the simple and seemingly trivial fact of releasing your camera's shutter and making a photograph. In that unique moment you are all alone and there all that you are and makes you unique is condensed. At that precise moment that only lasts for a sigh, you are creating: you are a photographer.
I insist that I do not know if anyone will find these ideas written in a rush useful. They are my first thirty years as an architectural photographer and here they are for whoever wants to read them.
These are my 30s and they are all passion. Do you understand me now what I was telling you about desire, lust and a very undisguised clickbait?.

He fet 30 anys com a fotògraf d'arquitectura i crec que al llarg de tot aquest temps he après algunes coses que potser hauria de compartir aquí amb vosaltres.
No sé molt bé quina autoritat tinc per escriure això més enllà de molts anys de professió. La qüestió és que la recerca de la bellesa en l'entorn construït és insondable i que això és el que jo faig i que sóc molt apassionat i feliç fent-ho.
Serien aquests algun tipus de consells per als joves fotògrafs? La veritat, no sé si ho són però aquí van perquè diria que d'això sí estic segur:
La fotografia és un art com ho són la pintura, l'escultura, l'arquitectura, la música, la literatura o el cinema. Totes les arts contemplen la realitat i la interpreten per tal d'interpel·lar a un espectador a qui qüestionen amb una creació de naturalesa estètica, sigui aquesta un quadre, una novel·la, una simfonia o una pel·lícula. La fotografia d'arquitectura és un art que representa en una imatge l'essència dels detalls ocults que formen l'entorn construït.
Si has decidit ser fotògraf, has triat una professió creativa. Ets un individu amb una capacitat única de mirar el món i descriure-ho com ningú més que tu pot fer-ho. Això serà el que faràs i hauràs recordar-ho i reivindicar-ho tots i cada un dels dies que surtis al carrer amb la teva càmera. Seràs un artista i això, això no tothom ho entendrà: prepara't per a donar milers d'explicacions i oblida’t de portar una vida segura i comfortable com la dels teus amics –però no t’amoinis que val la pena–.
Si insisteixes en ser un fotògraf, un artista i un professional, la teva responsabilitat serà mirar el món amb la teva càmera i qüestionar-lo sense parar per compartir la teva mirada amb qui vulgui contemplar-la. Només tu pots veure el que els teus ulls miren com tots els fotògrafs abans que tu han fet, tots ells individus el major poder dels quals ha estat ser conscients d'aquest talent. Tingues molt present que per a ser un artista no necessites tenir obra en un museu o una galeria: només és una qüestió d'actitud i tingues per segur que te la reconeixeran.

Recorda que tot i les grans paraules i tot això de ser un artista o no, no vius en una torre d'ivori. Tot el teu talent es basa en interpretar el present a partir de tot el que has après i assimilat tant de les arts com de totes les persones que es creuin pel teu camí. No estàs sol tot i que només tu decideixes què mirar i com explicar-ho. Veuràs en l'exercici de la teva professió que moltes persones ho valoraran i t'ho recompensaran amb oportunitats increïbles –sigues sempre agraït–. També coincidiràs amb molta gent menyspreable que hauràs gestionar perquè la seva toxicitat t’afecti el mínim.
La fotografia no és un ofici a què hom recorre per a resoldre una necessitat de comunicació amb una habilitat tècnica per molt brillant que aquesta sigui. Si és una professió creativa i tu reivindiques ser reconegut com un artista, no deixis mai d'aprendre de tots els estímuls estètics que t'envolten. Tots són importants i tots aporten alguna cosa, tota la història de l'art és tan rellevant com per a transformar-te encara que tu no en siguis conscient en el moment. Si vols ser un fotògraf has d'estar al món. Cultiva la teva mirada. De la mateixa manera, aprèn també a relacionar-te en societat i a gestionar la teva empresa –això et serà molt útil–.
Quan t'hagis format en tot el que el teu cervell pugui capturar, ho hagis mastegat i ho hagis digerit, posa't a treballar molt dur per crear el teu propi estil com a fotògraf. Inverteix temps i energia a meditar sobre què fa diferent la teva mirada i a saber com has d'aplicar-la. Tot el que aprenguis dels llibres de fotografia està molt bé però has de tenir un estil propi: en tots aquests anys cap altra cosa m'ha estat a mi tan útil per a aquest fi com la idea de pre-visualització d'Ansel Adams. Aquesta és la pedra sobre la que jo he construït la meva mirada. El teu estil és el que et fa diferent i interessant als ulls dels altres.
Recorda que sempre sense excepció tot depèn de tu. Que malgrat les circumstàncies per molt dures que siguin –les que siguin, professionals o vitals– sempre a la fi qui decideix ets tu. Les decisions que prens determinen fins on vols arribar i això es tradueix en el fet simple i aparentment trivial de disparar l'obturador de la teva càmera i fer una fotografia. En aquest moment únic tu estàs sol i aquí es condensa tot el que tu ets. O ets un fotògraf o no ho ets però en aquest precís instant estàs creant i tot passa en un sospir.
Reitero que no sé si a algú li seran útils aquestes idees escrites en un rampell. Són els meus primers trenta anys com a fotògraf d'arquitectura i aquí estan per a qui vulgui llegir-les.
Són 30 anys i tots són passió. Enteneu ara això que us deia del desig i la luxúria i un clickbait ben poc dissimulat?

He cumplido 30 años como fotógrafo de arquitectura y creo que a lo largo de todo este tiempo he aprendido varias cosas que debería compartir con vosotros.
No sé muy bien qué autoridad tengo para escribir esto más allá de muchos años de profesión. La cuestión es que la búsqueda de la belleza en el entorno construido es insondable y que eso es lo que yo hago y que soy muy apasionado y feliz haciéndolo.
¿Serían estos algún tipo de consejos para los jóvenes fotógrafos? La verdad, no sé si lo son pero ahí van porque diría que de esto sí estoy seguro:

Si has decidido ser fotógrafo, has escogido una profesión creativa. Eres un individuo con una capacidad única de mirar el mundo y describirlo como nadie más que tú podrá hacerlo. Eso será lo que harás y deberás recordarlo y reivindicarlo todos y cada uno de los días que salgas a la calle con tu cámara. Serás un artista y eso, eso no todo el mundo lo entenderá: prepárate para dar miles de explicaciones y olvídate de llevar una vida segura y cómoda como la de tus amigos –pero no te preocupes, vale la pena–.
Si insistes en ser un fotógrafo, un artista y un profesional, tu responsabilidad será mirar el mundo con tu cámara y cuestionarlo sin cesar para compartir tu mirada con quien quiera contemplarla. Sólo tú puedes ver lo que tus ojos miran como todos los fotógrafos antes que tú han hecho, todos ellos individuos cuyo mayor poder ha sido ser conscientes de ese talento. Ten muy presente que para ser un artista no necesitas tener obra en un museo o una galería: sólo es una cuestión de actitud y ten por seguro que te la reconocerán.

Recuerda que a pesar de las grandes palabras y todo lo de ser un artista o no, no vives en una torre de marfil. Todo tu talento se basa en interpretar el presente a partir de todo lo que has aprendido y asimilado tanto de las artes como de todas las personas que se crucen por tu camino. No estás solo aunque sólo tú decides qué mirar y cómo explicarlo. Verás en el ejercicio de tu profesión que muchas personas lo valorarán y te lo recompensarán con oportunidades increíbles –agradécelas, siempre–. También coincidirás con mucha gente despreciable que deberás manejar para que su toxicidad te afecte lo mínimo.
La fotografía no es un oficio al que se recurre para resolver una necesidad de comunicación con una habilidad técnica por muy brillante que esta sea. Si es una profesión creativa y tú reivindicas ser reconocido como un artista, no dejes nunca de aprender de todos los estímulos estéticos que te rodean. Todos son importantes y todos aportan algo, toda la historia del arte es tan relevante como para transformarte aunque tú no seas consciente en su momento. Si quieres ser un fotógrafo tienes que estar en el mundo. Cultiva tu mirada. De la misma manera, aprende también a manejarte en sociedad y a gestionar tu empresa –eso te será muy útil–.
Cuando te hayas formado en todo lo que tu cerebro pueda capturar, lo hayas masticado y lo hayas digerido, ponte a trabajar muy duro para crear tu propio estilo como fotógrafo. Invierte tiempo y energía a meditar sobre qué hace diferente tu mirada y a saber cómo has de aplicarla. Todo lo que aprendas de los libros de fotografía está muy bien pero has de tener un estilo propio: en todos estos años ninguna otra cosa me ha sido a mi tan útil para este fin como la idea de previsualización de Ansel Adams. Esa es la piedra sobre la que yo he construido mi mirada. Tu estilo es lo que te hace diferente e interesante a los ojos de los demás.
Recuerda que siempre sin excepción todo depende de ti. Que a pesar de las circunstancias por muy duras que sean –las que sean, profesionales o vitales– siempre al final quien decide eres tú. Las decisiones que tomas determinan hasta dónde quieres llegar y eso se traduce al hecho simple y aparentemente trivial de disparar el obturador de tu cámara y hacer una fotografía. En ese momento único tú estás solo y ahí se condensa todo lo que tú eres. O eres un fotógrafo o no lo eres pero en ese preciso instante estás creando y sólo dura un suspiro.
Reitero que no sé si a alguien le van a ser útiles estas ideas escritas en un arrebato. Son mis primeros treinta años como fotógrafo de arquitectura y aquí están para quien quiera leerlas.
Son 30 años y todos son pura pasión. ¿Entendéis ahora lo del deseo, la lujuria y un clickbait muy poco disimulado?
